SONGWRITING

Up to 8 students per day will write and record an original song from scratch over the 4 hours. During the first hour we’ll have a look at the main elements that make a song/composition: the harmony, beat, melody and lyrics.
Step 1. Harmony: We’ll look at typical chord progressions, pick one that suits the theme of the song, explore different ways of performing these chords and then record them down.
Step 2. The Beat: We’ll explore different rhythmic ideas and percussive sounds that would best suit the song for each section and then record them down either with the live kit or programming.
Step 3. The Bass: Next well we’ll add some groove to the track by creating a bass line that will fit our beat.
Step 4. Topline: We’ll look at ways to create hooky melody lines as well as writing lyrics that will compliment the harmony for the song.
During these sessions students will be working collaboratively so everyone will have the opportunity to contribute to the song whether they come up with the musical idea or record their performance. This will help develop creative thinking and advance their musical performance skills while learning how to work as part of a team.
